Exploring the North Island (1 month in 2002) : Like many travellers going to New Zealand, we started our trip in Auckland, the most populated city of the country and probably one of the world's most exciting waterside cities. We rented a sleepervan from BANZ Tours and Rentals Ltd
http://www.banz.co.nz
We explored the West Coast and took a ferry in Wellington for the South Island.
After 2 months, we made our way back to the North Island and visited Rotorua (nicknamed "Sulphur City"), an area with the most thermal activity in the country (bubbling mud pools, gushing geysers, unreal colors and bad smells) and also with a lot of tourist attractions about the Maori culture.

We also did an incredible hike often described as the best one day walk in New Zealand: the Tongariro Crossing which passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. Warning: the weather can change quickly so be prepared

We ended our 3 months adventure with some kayaking around Cathedral Cave in the Coromandel Peninsula.

Exploring the South Island (2 months in 2002) : We spent 2 months touring the South Island (the black line on the map)
In the north, Abel Tasman National Park is one of the most beautiful park in the country. Kayaking is a fun way to discover and enjoy the beautiful beaches.
Then, along the coast, we saw the 2 most famous glaciers (Fox and Franz Joseph). Nowhere else in the world, at this latitude, have glaciers advanced so close to the sea.
Along the way to Queenstown, we stopped in Wanaka and enjoyed Puzzling World. Queenstown, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, is nestled in what is surely one of the most scenic spot in the world. We didn't do any "extreme" activity such as bungy jumping, sky diving, parapenting, jet boating... but we had a great time exploring the area by foot and by bicycle.

Milford Track, South Island (03/2002) : The Milford Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks and it's often described as "the finest walk in the world". It's a highly regulated and popular track: you can tramp (word used in NZ for hike) in only one direction and you have to make advance bookings if you are an "independent tramper". My husband and I did a guided walk with Ultimate Hikes which means that we tramped with a lighter pack and stayed at cushy places with hot showers, hearty meals and comfortable beds. Since I was recovering from a broken foot and we signed up at the last minute, it was perfect. Fjordland receives 7 meters of rain annually but we were very lucky and enjoyed 4 sunny days.
