Grand Staircase-Escalante NM (Spring 2003 & 2005) : The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (administered by the BLM)covers 1.7 million mostly roadless acres. The principal attractions within the monument are based around tributaries of the two major river systems - the Paria and the Escalante.
From the Hole-in-the-Rock road, we loved exploring Peekaboo Slot Canyon and Spooky Slot Canyon.

On the Burr Trail, we did a nice hike and a fun bike ride. www.americansouthwest.net/utah/grand_staircase_escalante/burr_trail.html

On the Paria River, we hiked in the Buckskin Gulch which is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwest. http://www.americansouthwest.net/slot_canyons/buckskin_gulch/canyon.html

Natural Bridges N.M (Spring 2003) : Bridges National Monument covers a relatively small area in southeast Utah. It is rather remote and not close to other parks and so is not heavily visited. Natural Bridges are formed by running water. A 9 mile one-way loop road has several overlooks of the three bridges, currently known as Sipapu, Kachina and Owachomu after their names were changed to reflect the Hopi Indian history of the area. The last of these three is probably the most spectacular, and also the easiest to hike to.

Rafting on the San Juan River (Spring 2003) : In May 2003, 4 of us did a rafting trip on the San Juan River from Mexican Hat to Clay Hills Crossing. Because the river drops a gentle eight feet per mile and the water was low, there were few rapids. However, sand waves, a relatively rare phenomenon, were quite fun: they can suddenly build in the middle of a section of flat water, and then disappear just as quickly.
